Marin County likes to think of itself as a bastion of sustainable agriculture. It also includes a segment of its population whose belief in agriculture is more theoretical than practical.

This quandary is now before Marin’s Board of Supervisors. This week supervisors will consider modifying the ban prohibiting ranchers from killing animals for food on their premises.

Farming and ranching has always been a major part of Marin life. Thanks to enlightened legislators typified by the late supervisor Gary Giacomini and Marin Agricultural Land Trust’s imaginative approach to permanently retaining farmland, commercial agriculture remains the heart of West Marin.
