Whole new effort pulls derelict boats from Richardson Bay

Published Saturday February 11

Not occupied derelict boats bobbing on Richardson Bay are being removed under a whole new enforcement policy to address an issue that has vexed Southern Marin for years.

The action comes as many municipalities in Southern Marin, and a regional agency that oversees Richardson Bay, grapple with a community of “anchor outs” that live on their vessels and who have a long history on the bay.

The bay has become increasingly busy. In 2008, there were an estimated 98 vessels anchored in Richardson Bay. By 2015, the number had grown to approximately 210 to 240 vessels. While numerous are in fine condition, more than half are in fair to poor shape, or worse.
